Returning is an act of affirming, solidifying, or concretizing the past. It isn’t possible to return to something that does not exist, or to something that did not happen. But returning aslo reframes the past. It reflects a judgement that the past is worth returning to. Not in the sense of the introspective, spiritual meaning of the word, but solely in the sense that if you go back to a place you have been before, you’ve deemed it it worthy of examination.
